I have always had a thing about homes - a house, an apartment, a yurt - you name it, I want to explore it. When I was a kid, I loved drawings of homes, especially big cross-sections that showed every detail and how it all fit together. I've spent a lot of time looking at pictures of rooms.
I don't exactly want the things in the rooms, though I do want something from them: A sort of relaxation. (I get the same feeling when I watch people draw. This is why twenty years ago you might have found me on the couch watching Bob Ross's Joy of Painting on PBS at 4pm after a day of law school).
Here's a house I came across this morning, on the website of Roy McMakin's Domestic Architecture:
Dreamy House
This house is beautiful to me. I don't know why I like what I like, exactly. Why does this house make me happy? (I wonder the same thing about books - why do some of us have receptors for book X but not book Y? We may think we know why, but I'm guessing we're mostly just making that stuff up, and in fact it's a deeper mystery.)
For me, there's something restful yet interesting about Roy McMakin's spaces. I wish everyone could have a little time inside one of his houses, myself included.
